Two nugget-sized movie impressions

HITMAN

I admire the writer/director Richard Linklater for his brazen creativity.

Take Before Sunrise for example.

It was and still is, impressive how he managed to craft such naturalistic performances from his two leads. It was as if you were walking alongside Ethan Hawke and Julia Delpy, eavesdropping on their conversation.

And what conversations they had.

Illuminating, enlightening, witty banter on the surface but peel it back and you will discover philosophical musings on life, love, relationships.

All delivered with charm, personality, and wit. Even though it felt as if the actors were riffing on the spot, they were not.

The dialogue had been carefully crafted, written, and rehearsed.

Linklater had defied what I thought was then a pillar rule of screenwriting.

Keep dialogue short.

But Richard thought about it and shook his head and said Nah.

And went to do his thing.

And us creative folks are all the better for it.
